The first International Conference on Dubbing and Subtitling was held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in October 2001. It was a gathering of more than 50 academics and dubbing and subtitling professionals from all parts of the world.

Various companies and agencies, such as SDI (Hong Kong) Ltd., Disney Character Voices, Phoenix Television, and the Hong Kong Film Archive also participated in a round table discussion.

During the conference, the delegates unanimously voted for the establishment of an international organisation of translation for dubbing and subtitling, the aims being:

(1) to promote scholarship and research into the art and science in the field;

(2) to set up a networking mechanism for cooperation among academics, professionals, scholars and interested parties among the various regions in the world;

(3) to enhance the status and prestige of translators and professionals in dubbing and subtitling.

Presently ICODS has more than 70 members from:

Australia, Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, etc.

The headquarters is housed at the Department of Translation, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Chairman, Organizing Committee: Professor Gilbert C. F. Fong). The organization of the 2003 ICODS conference has been assigned to the Cultural Association "Beato Anbgelico" for Dubbing (Sergio Patou-Patucchi, President) and Libera Universita S. Pio V of Rome, Italy, which is also the venue for the conference. The conference will take place from June 3-7, 2003.

ICODS is an up-and-coming organization of audio visual translation professionals. There is plan to hold a conference once every two years, so that members can meet to reinforce their personal relationship and exchange information on the newest developments in scholarship, technology, techniques, and education and training.
