地震於下午4時半發生，雲南數個城市包括曲靖和昆明均感受到強烈震動，遠至重慶、四川樂山和成都以及山西西安均感震動。
Disaster struck at about 4.30pm with strong tremors felt in several cities in Yunnan, including Qujing and Kunming, and further afield in Chongqing, Leshan and Chengdu in Sichuan province, and Xian in Shaanxi.
